VIETNAM-CAMBODIA-MEKONG CRUISE
Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City - My Tho - Cai Be - Sa Dec - Chau Doc
Cambodia: Phnom Penh - Kampong Cham - Kampong Chhang - Tonle Sap - Siem Reap
This is the life. Sipping a drink on the balcony of your boutique cruise ship gliding down the Mekong as the sun sinks towards the horizon. (D)
We swap to a traditional sampan to sail to the noisy and very colourful Cai Be floating market. More canal sailing follows with stops to sample exotic fruits (traditional dessert demonstrations given onboard) on our way around the Binh Thanh Islands. Back onboard, relax as we gently glide downriver to Chau Doc, near the Cambodian border. (B / L / D)
We explore Chau Doc, starting with its local market near an ancient temple. Then we take a boat to some of the local floating villages and catfish farms. The rest of the day is pretty cruisey, as they say, as we head down the mighty Mekong to the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. (B / L / D)
We spend our day looking into the history and culture of this city, with its ageing French colonial and traditional Khmer architecture, and bustling riverside life. First stop is the dazzling white and gold Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, and National Museum. We spend some time at the Tuol Sleng museum that documents Cambodia’s tragic killing fields. Back onboard there’s time to freshen up for our evening of traditional dance and cocktails. (B / L / D)
As dawn breaks, we glide quietly out of the capital for an easy day of cruising on our way to Kampong Cham, with occasional stops at villages on the way. You can probably persuade one of the weavers on Chong Koh island to part with a beautiful silk. For a price. (B / L / D)
Wat Hanchey is a temple on a hill overlooking the Mekong that pre-dates Angkor. Built in the 8th century, the monastery and temples are excellent examples of architecture from the Chenla Empire. The views are good too, so have your camera ready. Back onboard, local monks perform a blessing ceremony before cruise to Kampong Cham and the colourful and ancient Wat Nokor. (B / L / D)
Tonle Sap is a very narrow river that swells to one Asia’s largest fresh water lakes during the rainy season. On arrival at Kampong Chhang, with its stilt houses, we become land lubbers again for an excursion to a pottery village, before venturing into the wetlands and floating villages on our motorboat. Enjoy lunch back on our ship as it follows its meandering river path towards our final destination. (B / L / D)
Siem Reap heralds the end of our journey. Your time is free until we take you to the airport. (B)
